The Lovely Bones: Movie Monday

Movie Monday @ Messy Mommy

I can't tell y'all enough--I love movies--my family loves movies...it's just something that we can do together if it's raining outside and I've exhausted all other resources of entertainment.

And I love how The Messy Mommy has Movie Monday--I get to let my readers in on great or crappy movies and then? I get to read about the ones you watched and I have more to add to my Netflix Queue!

This past Saturday we had some bad storms here in Mississippi--so Leo and I decided that we would turn on The Lovely Bones...which happened to be our latest Netflix pick.

I had read the book years ago {and let someone borrow it...and of course never go it back...}. Anyway, I remember reading the book and loving it. I loved how it was written and how it was told through her eyes even though she was no longer alive.

Being a Mom and watching it now made me see it through a whole new set of eyes. I couldn't imagine having to live through what this family did--I mean to lose a child is my worst fear...and the way it happened to Susie was just horrifying.

I loved this movie and was wish that I still had my copy of the book {it's by Alice Sebold in case you are wondering--I highly recommend it!} so I could read to see how accurate the movie was. I'm a little thankful that it was years ago that I read the book...I tend to be overly critical and not typically like movies after they were books. {Don't get me started on P.S. I Love You and The Shopaholic series. Ugh!}.

Have you seen this movie? Read the book tell me what you thought. And if you haven't--I definitely recommend them both.

I haven't seen the movie but I did read the book and I have to admit...I hated it. I won't see the movie because of it. It was a book club choice and there were many differing opinions on it. I think it's a book where you either really love it or hate it.

love love loved the book. can't even stand the thought of watching the movie...esp bc of the mom card.

ps - have you ever read her book? it's called lucky - it's her memoir ... wow. (not a light read)

We watched this movie this weekend also, and though it was a great Peter Jackson retelling, it , for me, didn't have the same feeling as the book. I would have loved to see more about crazy grandma and the mom, and I feel that the dad could have played a bigger part (like in the book). Alice Sebold is such a haunting author, and this movie, again for me, didn't have the same haunted presence as the book did.

Love the actress that played Susie though, she was perfect for the role!

@Amanda

I got the memoir when I was living alone (ahh bachelorette hood!) and I couldn't read it - it scared me sooo much!

Have you read the one about her killing her mom?? Now THAT one is crazy.

I've read the book, but haven't seen the movie yet... I guess I should see it.

I also read the P.S. I Love You book but haven't seen the movie yet... so the movie sucks?

Have a great day!

I read the book a few years ago and loved it...but I haven't been able to sit down and watch the movie yet! It's on my list :)

I want to both read it and see the movie.

I agree, the Shopaholic movie was SO DIFFERENT from the book. I hate when they do that!

I read the book many years ago and loved it as well! I've been seeing the preview for the movie and wanting to see it. Did it go straight to DVD? I don't remember seeing it hit the theaters?

We just discovered Netflix streaming through the Wii, so I will look out for the Lovely Bones and get it in que! Thanks for your review!

Thanks for the review. I wasn't sure how it would translate. I did read the book and liked it very much, so I guess I'll check this out!

The hubster and I watched that on Friday night! I thought it was a GREAT movie. I had read the book years ago but didn't remember all the details.

It did scare me a bit being a parent and all though. I almost wanted to sleep in my son's room that night!!

i watched this last weekend with a girlfriend while the kids napped. loved it. i haven't read the book but would like to although im not sure i could handle it. being a mom and seeing anything happen to children is just too horrible to comprehend.

I have yet to do either. I think I'd like to read the book first & then the movie. However, I do tend to be very judgemental when it comes to books turned movies, we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the review!

I read the book for a book club and I really don't think I can watch the movie. The book had me crying! The story is great, but so hard, to see it visually would be a struggle. So glad that you enjoyed it though.

We put this on our Netflix queue this weekend. We watched Where the Wild Things Are. HATED IT (flashback to In Living Color)! Ha! It really was bad. We also watched Avatar. Love this movie. This one wasn't Netflix we actually bought it and I'm so happy we did. I could actually watch it again!!!

I want to see this movie, but I want to read the book first. Although I've heard that it's hard to read (the subject matter, that is)

The book was good, the movie SUCKED if you were comparing the movie to the book. You have to read the book because so much is lacking from the movie. key points.

the time travelors wife did a better job at re-creating the book into a movie that this and I thought that would be a wreck.

Still the movie is good if you have not and are not comparing it to the book.

I haven't seen it, but really want to.

I hate the Shopaholic movie. It's like a completely different story from the book. It changed stuff that I loved.

I haven't read the book or seen the movie yet. I almost picked up the book a few weeks ago. If a book has been made into a movie, I want to read the book before watching the movie.

My daughter was wanting to see the movie, but I thought it looked a little "scary/deep" and we've not watched it yet. After reading several of your comments, I did check it out, but haven't had the chance to start it yet as I'm reading a Kay Dacus book. I did read a James Patterson book this last week "Sunday at Tiffany's" by James Patterson. I usually don't read secular books, I honestly don't have a tons of time to read, but am curious about this one.

I'll have to pick up the book.
