Potty Training is NO Joke, Y'all...

My sweet Bella...eating ice cream. With her hands *smile*

I did it. I decided that today is the day that my Bella will start with potty training. Let me fill you in on my day so far--I hope most days aren't like this...it will surely get better, right? Or is potty training one of those things where it gets worse before it gets better? I wish we were born potty trained...

*Told Isabella today was potty power day. She screamed but brightened up once I brought her potty chair to the living room with books.

*She was very indecisive on what underwear to wear...stars, Dora, flowers...decisions, decisions...

*She then wanted to go sans underwear...which I didn't mind...but kind of wanted her to get used to wearing them. I don't want her thinking commando is how we do things.

*After she had juice, water, etc we started the sitting on the potty. She sat there, we read Goodnight Moon together a few times. Nothing happened.

*She started screaming at me that she didn't want potty power, she was a big girl and other random sentences. After that her potty chair started getting thrown around the room--I'm serious! Haha! She was pissed and NOT happy about life...

*She then peed everywhere and screamed at me to get her potty {*sigh* I swear...I need Leo to pick up some wine tonite...}

*Life was good for awhile. She started accepting this whole underwear thing.

*Played outside in the hose while I scrubbed the back porch and trimmed bushes. No accidents. Came inside and she sat on the big toilet with her Dora toilet seat. She hollers out that she's done--and she went potty! Yeah! Gave her a quarter for her piggy bank {she's obsessed with it...}

*Then hell broke out...screaming about the piggy bank?! Not sure, but next round she'll be getting a sucker...she was beyond irate about having to wear a Pull-Up to bed, but got over it when I explained she didn't want potty on her pretty bed.

So, that's where we stand as of 2 pm today. One accident, one success. This potty training business? Yikes...I'm looking forward to getting over this hump and saving major $$$ from diapers...

Have you potty trained your little one{s}? Do you have any tips/tricks for me? I'm open to any and all suggestions--and if you had a super easy time--I'm totally jealous!

haven't started. i mean she goes on the potty every once in awhile but we def haven't gone into potty power mode just yet. i know it's coming but how sad is it that i am pretty sure that it's "me" that isn't ready!!

Everybody always told me girls were easier to train than boys, but mine were the opposite! Gabbie, now 5, was a nightmare when it came to potty training. Honestly, the a teenager who worked the summer at her daycare was the one who made it click with her. I still don't know exactly how she did it!

Sounds like a *somewhat* good start to potty training :) I wish I had some advice for you, but Meg was potty trained the old fashion way...peer pressure. One of her friends that is about 11 months older than her told her that only babies wore diapers, I never changed another diaper again. Meg was almost 2.5 years old.

Can't wait to read all the stories that I'm sure this adventure is sure to have. GOOD LUCK!

I'm on day 3 of potty training my son. This is by far the most stressful thing I've ever done as a mom. So many accidents. So much laundry. I hate this. But he's almost 3 and he seems to be ready... he's just not getting the "tell us BEFORE he wets his pants thing."

It's past noon, so it's not too early to have a drink, right?

Good luck to you! :)

I'm not looking forward to the potty training and cleaning pee and poop up off the floor....even though I still have to do that every once in a great mommy mistake!!
My sister is in the process of trying to potty train my nephew and she heard of doing a potty party. You have to dedicate an entire weekend or day, get balloons and prizes and make the day totally about her. I've heard that it's worked for some and others have to continue to do them and keep trying!! You can kind of make it your own. Just make the day all about her and make her think it's the coolest thing!

Oh man, I am not looking forward to potty-training! I agree...I wish they came potty-trained. Right now we're in the "blow-out" stage...it sure is a beast on our laundry!!

Oh my goodness, your scaring me for when it's time to train my little munchkin! Wish I could help!!
Good Luck!! Stick with it!! :)

potty training is so hard!! i gave bradley something for just sitting on the potty, even if he didn't do anything, like a fruit loop. If he did go then i gave him a skittle or m+m. i would set the microwave for 30 minutes and have him sit even if he wasn't sure if he needed to go. we did this for a few days, and then slowly weaned down to no treats, but stickers and stuff. i had a big pile of goodies from the dollar store for poop, and he got to pick something from that. good luck! it takes a while;)

I've been working at potty training my son the last couple weeks and I've decided it's just going to take some time for him to get it all down. He fights me too, so I totally understand what you're going through there. I keep wishing he was as easy as my daughter. She went without underwear the 1st day and I set the potty chair in her play area. She made it to the potty half the time (3/6). The next day she had it down! There was the occasional accident for a while, but she's almost 4 now and we haven't had an accident since last summer.

I recently decided to start potty training my little girl. She is only 21 months, but she is ready. (always tells me when she's pooping, haha!) Anyway, I LITERALLY sat by the toilet for an entire day. She was pretty much potty trained after 3 days. Hooray!

OH wait... so WHY is she wearing diapers?? Well, I had a really busy week the next week with clients. I couldn't constantly remind her to go to the potty, so therefore... she was going #1 and #2 all over the place. I decided I was not ready to spend every waking moment by her side reminding her to go. I will try again in a couple months. I think if I would have just given it a week (and not scheduled any appointments) it would have been a success.

GOOD LUCK! I heard potty training is one of the harder things you will have to do in parenthood.

Sounds like a pretty good day 1. Hope it all goes well.
For the longest time my daughter would only go on a mini-potty but at least she was going and she pretty much always told me so she basically potty trained herself (on the small potty) We finally got her on the big one and things were great! Now she's almost 4 and regressing....AHHHH!!! So frustrating. My friends's girl refused to do it until she went to K just cause she was so stubborn! Girls may be easier as far as picking up what they need to do but they are STUBBORN AS HECK! (takes after her mom :)

Potty training was a total nightmare... it is what I remember whenever I get "babies-on-the-brain"... I reacall the torture we all went through and decide to wait for grandkids... maybe...

Beth Zimmerman said...

It was a LONG time ago (since my "baby" is 20) but I waited until he was really ready (3 years, 4 months) and then all it took was a trip to Wal Mart for big boy underpants and a couple of reminders. Everybody has a different story but when I hear potty training terror tales I'm always glad we just waited.

Sounds like you guys had a pretty good day! What I did was give him as much juice as he wanted. The more he drank the more attempts we had at making it on the potty! Day 2 was the worst for us.. but then it was better each day from there!

Potty training is hell. Pure and simple. Buddy was 3.5 before he was trained and it sure wasn't anything I did. He finally decided he wanted to be like his friends and wear underwear. Thank God.

I can only imagine how frustrating this must be, but I have to admit it made me chuckle! All the ups & downs.. that girl doesn't know what kind of mood she's in! Hope the potty training gets easier!

Been there, done that with the potty training... it actually went better than expected. I've blogges about it before. The best blog I did about it (that has the most details of our "system") is this one: http://melner.blogspot.com/2009/05/potty-training-for-real.html.

Feel free to check it out... GOOD LUCK!

YIKES I'm scared. The dude has started telling me that he's yucky when he messes his diaper, so I think we might be getting close.

2 Words - EGG TIMER

My son was 3+ when he declared that he didn't want to wear diapers anymore, but never made any indication that he recognized the sensation of going to the bathroom. So for the first few days the egg timer was set for 15 minutes and every fifteen minutes he sat on the potty. Then 30, 45, 60 for about a week, then no more timer. I also showed him how to hop up on a stool and pull his own pants down.

Just my 2 cents, I'm surely no expert.

Potty training is tough work. It didn't really work for my daughter until she turned three...I was pressuring her before that and she just wasn't ready...I think that the child needs to be ready otherwise you are just setting yourself up for a stressful time!

I have no advice to offer. That is something I am dreading with Allison. But I do have a question, at what age should you start potty training?

DeAnn said...

I can't offer advice on the potty training but I am still rofl about her wanting to go commando! You are so funny.. I love reading your posts.. She is a doll too! love ya girl~

congrats on the success! what if you let her choose her prize; a quarter, a sticker, a lollipop, m&ms, ect. Might avoid the freakouts, then again maybe not LOL

The three-day thing worked like a charm for us...but they do have to go commado for that!!! LOL!

This is what is working for us. Find a toy that she really wants, for Miss H it is a tinkerbell tricycle. Then make a sticker chart and everytime she goes on the potty, she gets to pick out a sticker and put it on. When the chart is full, she can get the toy. We even gave her two stickers for #2 and I have taken stickers away for out of control behavior (like throwing the potty.) We are on Day 7 of this and she is still having accidents half the time. So far she is staying dry for naps and a night.

GOOD LUCK!!

I am still potty training. My daughter will stay dry in pull-ups but not in regular underwear which is weird and I can't figure out why. Good luck. I honestly thought it would be easier than it has been. Silly me:)

okay...after all those comments girl...i am totally scared to even begin...it's hell, its a nightmare, 3 days going commando? yikes...good luck! i do know girls are easier b/c they don't like to be messy. will could sit in a poop for two hours and probably not care!
we are working our way to the potty..i show it to him..get him interested...but i might have to go and get a book on this 3 day program or something.

Right there with ya! We've been trying to get Bayden interested in toilet training.
He says he wants to wear underwear like daddy. He gets excited when he pees in the potty. But he just won't tell us when he has to go and sometimes you take him to the potty kicking and screaming, sometimes it's willingly.
We are planning on doing a weekend sometime where he wears underwear and if he doesn't tell us he has to go he gets wet. But honestly I don't know if it;s time yet as he will just pee and the floor and stand in it and still not say anything. Lol!
Let's just say we are still in the "potty introduction" stage. Good Luck Chelle! Maybe you will discover a trick that will liberate us all!

*lmao* I can't believe she threw the potty! That's too good. :)

My niece had no problem potty training really, but my nephew... wow. He's 3 now, and my sister still has issues with him. He's out of diapers, but the other day when I was on the phone with her he just decided he wanted to pee on the bathroom rug infront of the tub instead of oing on the potty. I found it funny, she did not. *lol*

My dad actually potty trained me and my sister, everytime he'd go to the bathroom (no worries, he sat down every time) he got to sit on our potties too and we had books to read, coloring books and crayons and some toys. While he sat, we did.

She didn't want potty power?!! Wow!

My son wasn't trained until he was nearly 4. I am NO assistance here.

Good luck, sweetie!

I am so thankful for our babysitter because during the day she was so good about making sure Carter went to the potty at scheduled times. Have you ordered the dvd from Pull-Ups? They have a little DVD they will mail you for free. Carter liked the songs. They also have ideas there along with charts, coloring pages and other activities. If you haven't already you should check it out.

It will get better. I promise!

And, you know what... if she's not ready, and you don't want to keep it up, you can always try again a little later.

No. It gets far, far, far worse before it gets better. But it DOES get better. My son not only mastered it, he learned how to wipe himself all on his own before turning 4. So hang in there!

I used a multi-level reward system involving Hershey kisses, Mathcbox cars, and stickers. Money was not option when my sanity was concerned.

Mostly, I let him lead the process. I bought the overpriced potty that cheered and played music, because it was the one he picked out. If he wet his pants in public in spite of being asking to go, I changed his clothes but then we went home as a "consequence". Stuff like that...

After a while, he figured it out. We both did, and you will too!

Happy Monday!

I would call that a success! Hubby was home for a week after The Baby was born and trained Raven. 1 week, after I had been trying for 3 months!

The best advice I have was given to me by another mommy whose 3 children were all potty trained by 16 months...this is how it is done...

Pick one day - because one is all you should need - that you can stay home all day...no trips outside the house at all.

Get a treat that Bella likes, suckers or quarters - my friend used M&M's - and fill a clear glass jar with them...keep the jar at eye level so Bella can see it.

The week before that day you stay home, give Bella a treat from the jar whenever she wants...all week, every day for that week...for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks - it doesn't matter. I mean, she has to eat real food too, of course, but if she wants a sucker first - so be it.

Then the day you stay home, you tell her that she can only have a treat when she uses the potty - properly! Potty training will only take a day - at most.

I realize this means you're getting her addicted - in a way to suckers, but it does work and she won't eat them all the time...after learning to use the potty she is only to get one when she uses the potty.

Works like a charm!!

Email me, my friend, I can be your in-depth resource on what NOT to do. I basically did everything wrong with my older one. With Li'l Bit, right after preschool finishes for the year, she's going cold turkey.
