"The Rachel" Gone Wrong...So, So Wrong...

I am pretty certain that I'll remember the day I went in for "The Rachel" for the rest of my life. In fact, I am sure that when I have grandchildren I will be telling this story and having them laugh at me and bring it up at every single occasion like my sister does...

Hope you're ready to laugh your ass off at me hysterically--it is pretty funny {now that 15 years have gone by!}...

I was getting ready to go into my Junior--or was it Senior?!--year of high school. Now for those of us who have been graduated for longer than a couple of years let me refresh our aging memories a bit. High school is that awkward time. Breakouts, hormones, broken hearts...it's amazing I have any happy memories left after all of that! It's the time where you "think" you're an adult only to now laugh hysterically when thinking back how "grown up" you were. It's the time when you can still eat a lot--but you have to lay off the junk a little bit or else that prom dress won't be as flattering.

Basically, in a nutshell, it was hell. To make me feel a little better about myself my Mom asked if I wanted to go to her hair stylist at the time. Heck yeah! I don't think I really got my hair "done" so to say. I would get a cut here and there, but nowhere as nice as this place.

When the big day arrived I knew exactly what cut I wanted. Uber popular and super cute, I just knew that "The Rachel" would transform my life--I would have the haircut that would make all high school boys think that I was gorgeous. I couldn't wait to show up for the first day of school looking like Rachel!

I go into the salon with my sister and Mom. I may have been late to the appointment. I can't remember. Oh--and my sister swears to this day I bumped a man in the parking lot with my car. I have absolutely NO recollection of this--but she laughs hysterically and says, "Do you remember when you bumped that guy in the parking lot when you got your hair cut?? Bwahahahaha!"

And then I tell her no, I do not. That is a lie and I know I would remember something like that happening...

Oh. So back to the story.

Tell the stylist exactly what I want--I mean, everyone knew what "The Rachel" was back then. And I'm pretty sure a lot of us still know what it is today. I'm sitting in the chair, she's cutting away and I remember thinking that I was the luckiest girl in the world, I couldn't believe that I was getting "The Rachel" and I couldn't wait to go cruising with my girlfriends and meet boys and...

I looked in the mirror. And this is what was staring back at me:

I had a MULLET!! I just sat there and wanted to cry. I hated it. Hatedhatedhatedhated it!

My Mom kept telling me how much she loved it {to this day she claims it was cute...riiiight....} and I think my sister laughed right then and there. I ended up wearing hats galore that summer and my new bff were bobby pins. It was awful.

*Shudder* I bet I'll have nightmares tonite with mullets appearing....seriously....

Have you ever had a horrible yet highly hilarious hair malfunction?? Please tell me at least one of you have?! If not, just make one up....I'm kidding {sort of....}

I never had a mullet, but I had its ugly cousin, the shag. I feel your pain, darlin'.

That picture just about made me spit my beer out all over my computer. You POOR THING! The only time I took my hair into my own hands was the summer before senior year. I let my friend cut my hair into a one length, chin length bob. Then we colored it red! HA!! If you email me, I'll email you the picture!

I had a mullet and a shag. I've had orange hair, bad perms, blue-black hair - you name it.

When I was 15 my sister and I really wanted to upset our mother so we decided we would dye my hair bright red! So we get the box of dye, carefully follow the directions, wait, wait, wait, wash it out and blow dry it, only to have a calico staring back at up in the mirrow. Turns out if you hair goes past your chin you need at least two boxes - and my hair was to my waist and super thick! I probably needed four boxes, according the the stylist enlisted to "fix" my hair!

Oh, no!!!!!!

I want a real pic. ;)

One time, waaaaaaay too much got taken off- the stylist ended up having to shave my neck, it was so short. Oh, I CRIED!!!!

oh girl I feel you! Right after my son was born I had a friend that cut hair so (instead of paying someone to do it) I have her a measly 5$ for the dye that i wanted & let her do it. It was one of Kelly Clarksons cuts that I wanted.. I ended up getting super super short hair all one length straight across with bangs WTF! not to mention the dye turned out making me look like a cheetah or something it was awful.. i wore bandannas until it grew out that was 3 years ago and I havent cut my hair since haha

Way too funny!!! And it's only that funny to me because that EXACT same thing happened to me. I think I was a freshman in highschool and wanted the same haircut and ended up with a mullet!! WTF!!! Apparently no hairdressers at that time besides Jennifer Anistons knew what the hell they were doing!!
Love the pic!!!

I want the real picture too!!! Come on!!!

Too funny!! I just went to Supercuts (yes, I did...) Friday and am a bit unsure of the results... nothing as bad as a mullet though.. Good God!

I've had more bad haircuts than I can count, including a mullet I got when I stopped the hairstylist halfway through (he was cutting it waaaay too short, and I preferred a mullet to no hair at all).

They do make for good stories though!

hehe that was great!! oo man that would have been miserable! I once tried to dye my hair strawberry blond. My hair is dark blond/light brown/ w/ some red tones.. i.e. a PIA to dye. I tried to do it myself and ended up looking like carrot top!! I was about to go back to college for sophomore year and was terrified! I went into the salon my mom usually took me too. I didn't have an appointment I just walked in and started crying :-P My hairstylist fit me right in and dyed it to what she thought she remembered my hair looking like. It was pretty close I then had to promise to never try and dye it myself again. Well that and pay $100 for it to be fixed :-P

Noooo way... oh, you poor, poor thing! I would have had nightmares for months! Now, you really should post a picture of you, you know! ;)

Oh no no...that is HORRIBLE! But I have done that...gone in with one idea, and walked out with something else entirely. Dear god I shudder just thinking about it. lol

lol i told my mom (who was good at cutting hair) I wanted the short do from Ghost on Demi Moore. I got a bowl cut instead and I started a new school where everyone thought I was a boy. Ugh! I should blog this!

That picture is not feathered enough around the face AND yours was cut into a point in the back!!!! LMAO!! And yes you did hit that guy!! TWICE! Remember that time I cut your hair and we only got one snip into it and you screamed at me and had to go to a salon?? BWAHAHAHA

Ok for MY worst haircut: The week of my senior pics I wanted a cut...similar to the RACHEL cut...but the same lady that gave you your cut made mine WAY too short and I looked like freaking princess leah!! (however you spell her name) It was horrible. And now those stupid pics are forever plastered all over mom and dad's house.
LOL!!

Holy cow girl you have made my night! I'm so sorry you didnt end up with your Rachel hair style (I love Friends!).

FYI: The hubs loved your story but said you actually ended up with a Fullet, a female mullet, lol.

I accidentally gave myself a mullet about 2 years ago. I went to Hair C*** with a hooded swetshirt tight up tight, and told the lady I cut my hair badly. She had a high pitched voice and the whole salon heard "Why'd ya go an give yerself a mullet?"
Mortified.
I don't cut my hair anymore.

I had a supersupersuper cute haircut once, and I went to try to have it recreated, but for some reason I asked for shorter bangs, and as it turned out, the longer bangs made the haircut supersupersuper cute. Even better, this was right before my wedding! (My first, so no big deal now, but at the time...) ;-)

My whole life has been on hair malfunction. It's true. I've never known what to do with my hair and for a significant portion of junior high and high school I had, what I can only call "DJ Tanner Bangs".

My biggest fear is that it will all fall out and I'll have a bald spot like my mom and my grandmother. The massive clumps of hair that have been falling out since A was born isn't helping my phobia much.

ahem. just a bit of exaggeration going on here. AND, you may not recall, but the Rachel cut at that time really didn't look like the pic you used either, . . . & your hair was cute! I think it was just too thick to lay the way you had envisioned, . . . it was NOT a mullet lol!

& Kristi, I did just about die when you walked in with your new cut right before senior pics! All through your photo session I kept trying to undo those round bumps on the side of your head (your princess leah rolls) and you would hatefully slap my hands away!

You girls.

LOVE YOU!

I'm with Shell. I need a real picture! LOL

With naturally curly hair, it's kind of hard to get a bad cut unless they fro it out. Thankfully that hasn't happened to me!

I just had to laugh out loud in pity for ya! I had the same cute! The stylist didn't know what she was doing - and it ended up like a mullet too - thank goodness - I made her cute that rat tail right off - then and there! :)

I am sorry about your mullet...but this post made me laugh SOOOO hard!

Erin said...

I went in for the Julia Roberts, which was around the same time as the Rachel, and she had a similar "do" at the time, only shorter. And perhaps one day I'll be brave enough to post the real photos. But probably not.

We women and our hair---it never ends!

LOL - poor thing. I have had some B-A-D haircuts, but never the mullet.

Danielle said...

Aw. You poor thing. The style would have been cute had it came out right! LOL.

Glad you can laugh about it now!

Krystyn said...

Oh, "The Rachel" gone terribly wrong!

I had a terrible one. I went back the next day to have them fix it. It was that bad. Terrible, horrible and not good at all.

ME TOO! i had "the rachel" my junior or senior year and totally looked like a lion. i don't think i wore my hair "down" for the next six months.

Oh boy, mullets are never good, especially on a girl. So sorry you were traumatized like that. My worst hair cut was the short guy trend (think Demi Moore in Ghost). It didn't look so good on me. I was so upset I didn't see my husband (then boyfriend) for a whole week!

ha ha ha.... Oh you poor poor poor dear!! Highschool is SO horrific anyway!!

Good thing hair grows back!!

OMG! I had the Rachel too, and it transformed my life! It was also my senior year of high school. The first time I got it cut, it was awesome. The second time I had it cut, they messed it up. But not as bad as you. It just ended up being really really short.

Kristin said...

OMG the Rachael! bwhahaha

Was it really THAT bad? Oy.

I had bad cuts when I was a kid. They made me look like a boy. Never again...

Oh you poor girl! Was that hair stylist hiding under a rock? How could she get it that wrong?!?!? I remember the first time I cut my hair to my chin. I loved it but then I had a major freak out when I was in the shower the next morning washing my hair and it was all gone...I had long hair for most of my life that it just felt wrong not to have it any more.

Then more recently I had a perm...what in the world was I thinking? I wanted big curls like a body wave and ended up with tight spiral curls. I was not a happy camper and Josh's reaction didn't make me feel any better. To make it wore that perm lasted longer than any in my entire life.
