I Shall Call Her Charlotte...

This little lady has taken up residence outside of our dining room window...

I thought she was a little scary at first.

That was around a month ago.

Now that the girls and I have watched her create her web...

Isabella even talks to me about the spider.

She sometimes thinks the spider is scary...

But most of the time?

She tells me:

Mommy! Look! It's the SPIDER!

Me?

I think she's beautiful.

I'm not a big spider or bug fan at all.

But this one has definitely tangled me in her web...

WOW! What kind of spider is it?

I think I'd be okay with the spider as long as it stayed put on the outside of the window!

EWWWWWW! That is so gross! Glad the girls aren't freaked, but I'd be calling the closest exterminator if it were at my house. Yucky!

When I lived on a farm in Mi there were a ton of these. Kinda scary when going for a walk and you become entangled in their web. The ones in Mi had more yellow spots on the side but they looked very similar and they were simple garden spiders, very beneficial. Good for you teaching your girls spiders/bugs are not to be feared. They'll have a leg up on teasing boys and who knows maybe even grow up to be an entomologist. :)

I wish I could be the cool mom who would let the spider be, or take spiders outside when I find them in the house...I just can't. Just looking at these pics gives me the heebie jeebies! So, you go cool mom!!

I think she is beautiful...I am so glad you didn't run out with a broom and destroy her!!!
It looks like a garden spider, very beneficial to your yard.
I am not fond of spiders in my house, but outside in nature where they belong is a GOOD thing!
What a great learning opportunity for the kids. library books about spiders, how about the song "I don't know why she swallowed that fly." The spider came next...that one always made me laugh!

Charlotte is a Garden Orb Weaving Spider, and she has visited us before. You can tell its her by the zig-zag pattern she makes in her web. She is a wonderful allies in catching pesky bugs!

I grew up watching her, each time she chose to spin her web in a sunny window, so we could watch her. Later, we would mourn the fact when we saw her egg sac, we knew she wouldn't be with us much longer. Seeing her tiny babies emerge filled with hope and the following year, a new Charlotte took her place.

An excellent book to read to your kids is Diary of a Spider. My kids LOVED that book! Enjoy your guest!

I took some pictures very similar to these at Dearest's house last week. They have at least 5 of these along the fence in their back yard.

They sure are pretty, but I can't do spiders!!
